Founded in 1972 through the vision of Mr. Honorato B. Aquino and Mrs. Angelita B. Aquino, together with a pioneering team led by Dr. Umberto Reyes, Bataan St. Joseph Hospital & Medical Center (BSJHMC) has grown from one of the province's first private hospitals into its leading healthcare institution. Named in honor of Balanga's patron, St. Joseph, the hospital has, for over five decades, paired compassionate service with relentless innovation, bringing world-class care closer to home for the people of Bataan.

From its earliest years, BSJHMC set the pace for advancement in the province. The Department of Surgery established a minimally invasive surgery section in 2009, expanding laparoscopic options for general, vascular, and thoracic procedures. That same year, the Kidney Center opened with hemodialysis services and modern dialysis machines. In 2010, the hospital introduced a dedicated gastrointestinal section with video endoscopy for precise diagnosis of gastric ulcers, cancers, colonic polyps, and tumors. Ophthalmology elevated outcomes further with the INFINITI Phaco system, enabling bloodless, sutureless cataract surgery.

Imaging has long been a defining strength. The Medical Imaging Unit offers comprehensive modalities including Ultrasound, 2D Echocardiography, Treadmill Stress Testing, Mammography, and round-the-clock X-ray and CT-Scan backed by seasoned specialists. The addition of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in 2018 placed BSJHMC on par with the country's top centers, sharpening diagnostic accuracy across neurology, orthopedics, cardiology, and oncology, and laying the foundation for the hospital's planned Stroke Unit. In 2025, BSJHMC strengthened this continuum of care by establishing a dedicated Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Unit integrated with the planned Stroke Unit, advancing early mobilization, neuro-rehabilitation, and seamless transition from acute imaging to recovery.

In 2023, BSJHMC reached a transformative milestone with the acquisition of the GE IGS 5 VCON Cathlab with Artificial Intelligence, the first of its kind in the Philippines and the second in Asia, formally inaugurated on December 8, 2023. This cutting-edge platform ushers in a new era of image-guided therapy for Bataan, enabling advanced procedures such as coronary angiography, angioplasty, stent implantation, and other minimally invasive vascular interventions with exceptional clarity and precision. For Bataenos, and for patients from neighboring provinces, the VCON Cathlab brings lifesaving cardiac and vascular care within reach, shortening the distance between diagnosis and treatment and elevating outcomes through faster, safer, and more targeted care.
